Testing Air Resistance

We had a busy time in science today making parachutes and testing air resistance. We made parachutes with different sized canopies and dropped them from the top of the climbing frame. We observed which took the longest time to fall.

Our 5th and final GO session

Our 5th and final GO session this afternoon has been bug-tastic!
First, we learnt all about why insects are so important to our environment. Did you know that for every human being on this earth there are approximately 200 million insects?
Here are two of the bug mansions currently on our school site, which we all went to look at today.

It gave us lots of ideas for what we needed to collect for our own bug hotels. Here we are busy collecting bug friendly materials.

We set to work in class, filling up the inside of a plastic bottle section.

Finished! Now to hang them from the trees in our pond area.

Westonbirt Parent Helpers

Thank you so much for all the offers of help on the Westonbirt trip. We have had a fantastic response but due to limited space, I'm afraid not everybody can come. If you have offered to help, your child should have come home tonight with a note in their planner.

Do remember to return all permission slips and contributions by this Friday.

Many thanks for your support.

Mrs Adams

Treat afternoon this Thursday

The pom pom pot is full again, which means it's time for a treat!

On Thursday, please could your child bring in:
A blanket (we will be making indoor dens!)
A cuddly toy/small pillow (not essential but some children are keen to bring these in)
A pair of pyjamas/onesie/comfy lounging clothes to change into
A small tub of snacks to snack on

Children may also bring in a U certificate film they would like to watch (named please) and we will vote on our favourite choice in the morning, ready to watch that afternoon.

Our 4th GO session

Today, our GO session has been linked to our Literacy topic of Stories from another culture. We listened to an Estonian tale called 'Mikko and the trees', in which the trees could speak. Inspired by the story, we used clay to make faces on the trees in our woodland area near the field. What a magical place we've created!

Sun safety

We are likely to have some sunny weather coming up over the next term, so please remember to come to school with a sun hat and with sun lotion applied. This is particularly relevant at the moment, with our GO fortnight continuing into next week and the Tri-golf tournament planned for this Friday.

Our 3rd GO session

Trees today! We got to know some of the trees in our school grounds (we discovered on Monday that there are 165 of them). We felt the bark, looked up into their branches, traced their roots, put our arms around them (some children even tried to listen to them!) and finally gave our favourite tree a name that we felt suited it's appearance! Following this, we used a tree trail spinner to locate the following trees in our grounds: Ash, Cherry, Hawthorn, Elder, Copper Beech, Bristol Whitebeam, Willow and Lime.

While outside, we collected words and phrases about trees in the form of a mind map. This will be useful when we write about trees next week. Our forks and trowels were handy when we removed weeds.

Then we cut back the remains of daffodils with scissors, to make space for new planting. Some of us had the chance to plant a Petunia!

Wednesday GO detective

Well done to the children who correctly identified yesterday's plant, which was a Nasturtium ( Latin name: Tropaeolum).

If you can identify the plant featured below, write it on a piece of paper and pop it in my letters tray tomorrow. Correct answers score a team point!

Our 2nd GO session

Today, we finished clearing the paths around the pond, making it accessible to all the other classes and to wheelchair users. We made a den inside an overgrown shrub, but unfortunately it started to rain heavily before we had the chance to go inside! Maybe tomorrow?
Everyone was very excited to find different types of newts nestling in the foliage, as well as frogs, snails, spittlebugs (froghoppers) and some very fat slugs! Thankyou to all the parents who have kitted out their children so sensibly for the great outdoors.

Tuesday GO detective

Well done to those of you who guessed yesterday's plant. It was a Marigold (Latin name: Calendula).

Here is today's challenge.....it's a tricky one, because this plant isn't in flower yet. You just have the leaves to go by!

And you can find the plant here;

Answers in my letters tray tomorrow please, for a chance to earn a team point.

Our first GO session

We estimated the amount of trees we thought were in the school and then counted them to find the actual number....
We looked at dandelion flowers, leaves and seeds and how they disperse....
We started to clear the path in the pond area, thinning out the geranium plants.....
We removed weeds from the bark area around the pond....
What a fantastic start!

Quotes from Class 9
Jasmine - I really liked it because I've never really gone around the school looking at trees and there were some I hadn't noticed before.
Luke - I really like the idea of going outside to get more fresh air.
Ella RD - I used to be more of an indoor person, but after this afternoon I'm going to try and be more of an outdoor person.
Huw - All I used to do outside was go on my scooter in the lane, but now I think I'll make my own den.

A GO request for bug hotels

Class 9 are keen to make bug hotels like this:

In order to take part in this activity, your child will need ONE piece of a plastic bottle (cut up at home by an adult please), as pictured below:

The photo shows quite a large bottle, but a piece off a small bottle is also fine.

Please bring this in by Friday this week.
Thankyou so much!
