Exciting new books!

Thanks to Hensa, we have some incredible new books for our reading corner. Class 9 got the chance to look at them this morning, and just can't wait to get stuck into some new stories. Thankyou to everyone involved in organising these brilliant new additions to our classroom (and a special thankyou to Mrs Spence and Miss Jones for selecting such a super range of texts, all the way from a supplier in Birmingham!). Many children are bringing home one of these new books tonight, such was the excitement!

Jeremy Strong comes to HJS

This afternoon, the famous author Jeremy Strong came to visit us.

He showed us some of the weird and wonderful things that children send him in the post....

This is a piece of writing he did when he was 6 years old...

Jeremy Strong does most of his writing in this shed at the bottom of his garden.

Here is his desk...

Here is his cat Jeeves....

This is Molly, the inspiration behind the 'One hundred mile and hour dog' story.

What a wonderful, inspiring afternoon!

Bug Hunting

We have started our new science topic 'Habitats' and all went on a bug hunt this morning. We found lots of mini beasts living in our school grounds.

Moving picture books

Class 9 always enjoy starting a new term by making new discoveries.
This morning we have looked closely at lots of pop up books and tried to work out how the mechanisms are created.

First, we learnt how to make a box fold.

Then we tried to make a mouth fold.

Next, we attempted 'The rotator', which involved using a split pin.

The paper spring was fun!

Finally, we learnt how to make a slider....

.....and a lift open flap feature.

Thankyou so much to those of you who kindly brought in a pop up book of your own, and especially to those children who'd tried to make their own over the holidays.

Your child will be making a pop up book with a partner on Thursday afternoon. Each pair has decided on a topic. They may like to try out some techniques at home, or bring in pictures and / or facts to add to their books. If so, please bring anything in on Thursday morning please!

Happy Easter! Pop up reminder....

Have a fantastic Easter holiday, Class 9!

On the first day back (Tuesday 22nd April), it would be BRILLIANT if you could remember to bring in any pop up books you have from home. We will be looking closely at how they work, as part of our latest D and T project.

Thankyou all, and happy munching on those Easter eggs!

Our moment had arrived! Come on Class 9!

Easter Trail

Class 9 experienced a very special morning today. We learnt about what Easter means to Christians by using all our senses.

We smelt fish when by the Sea of Galilee, tasted bread around the 'Last Supper' table and felt grass beneath our feet in the Garden of Gethsememe. We heard the crow of a cockerel in the High Priest's Courtyard and really loved collecting little mementoes during each stage of the trail.

The children all made a clay fish during the trail, which they will soon bring home, and got a taste of some delicious Rocky Road to remind them that Jesus regarded his disciple Peter as his 'rock'.

The Redland Education Centre team and volunteers were so welcoming to our school and were as impressed with our pupils as we were with them!

Many thanks to the lovely group of parent helpers who accompanied us on our trip today.
