Class treat

We enjoyed our well deserved class treat on Monday and had hot chocolate and toast as well as competing a timed colouring in challenge with an extra handicap and a Christmas quiz!
Well done for working so hard class 9!

Topic Talk Time

Thankyou to our wonderful 'Topic Talkers' today. What a great start!
Today we learnt that.....

A panda has 5 fingers and one thumb.
A baby panda is born only 15cm long, and is 700 times lighter in weight that it's mother.

We also found out that an otter lives in a holt. Did you know that otter poo is 3 to 10 cm long? Neither did we!

There are 1500 species of scorpions in the world, but only 25 are deadly to humans. Often, the larger the scorpion, the less deadly it is! They live for between 2 and 15 years.

Number of the Week

Here are some things you can practise at home (using a 2 digit, 3 digit or 4 digit number - choose what is right for you) to become super speedy at our 'Number of the Week' work in class:

Rounding to the nearest 10 and 100
Adding and subtracting 10 and 100
Multiplying by 10 and 100
Dividing by 10 and 100

(Remember the Yeti......it's your effort that makes a difference, even if it seems tough at first!)

Inverted Comma Experts

This week, as part of the build up to writing a Fantasy Land story, the children have been looking at how to use inverted commas (speech marks) accurately. I've encouraged the class to take extra special notice of how they are used in their reading books.

Perhaps it could be something to talk about at home during reading time?

Board game teamwork

Reading is all about understanding, not just being able to read the words. What better way to show this than with a team challenge?

This morning, we worked in groups to read the instructions of 8 brand new games purchased for our wet play box. Some of the games were trickier to put together and understand than others. However, we all had a Yeti attitude (ask your child!!) and managed to play some really fun games together.

Reading reminder....

There has been some terrific reading going on in Class 9 so far this week. Keep it up!

Here's a useful reminder about our reading homework expectations in Year 4. Do remember to hand your reading record in on the correct day (Monday is Hawks, Tuesday is Ravens, Wednesday is Kestrels and Thursday is Eagles). We love to see that you've read to an adult out loud, and if you do so at least 3 separate times every week (for about 10 minutes each time), we can award you a team point and sticker. Please remember that an adult needs to write in your yellow reading record and to sign each time they hear you in order to get the team point award!

Trip helpers

Many thanks to those of you who have already brought slips back for the Caerleon trip. To those who have offered to help, I shall be in touch by the middle of next week after discussing numbers etc with the other Year 4 staff. Thankyou!

Carousel tomorrow

As we mentioned at the Year 4 briefing meeting last week, every fortnight on a Wednesday afternoon the children will be involved in an Art/Music/ P.S.H.E Carousel. Miss Browne will teach our class Music, and Miss Cutler will teach Art. I will be teaching Class 7 and Class 8 P.S.H.E (Personal, Social and Health Education) during the Carousel session. The following week, Class 9 will be with me, as normal, for their turn at P.S.H.E.

It's an ideal way for your child to meet all the Year 4 teachers as well as giving them the opportunity to learn in a different classroom environment.

Topic Talks and Target time

Your child should have brought home a 'Topic Talk' letter tonight, with the date of their talk on. This is a very informal opportunity for children to get used to talking in front of an audience. We have really emphasised that it needn't be a long, complicated talk, and we would appreciate you reassuring your child of the same at home!

Every term, we have a particular Maths skill that the children get the opportunity to work on each week during 'Target Time'. This skill is at 3 different levels, although we may offer additional support or extension to particular children if needed. At the moment, the three levels are:

I can double all numbers to 20
I can double all numbers to 50
I can double all numbers to 100

Every week, if children confidently demonstrate that they have reached a level, they get to move their special name badge onto a chart. At all times, it is individual effort that is emphasised and praised, no matter what level the children reach.

You may like to ask the children about the 'upside down parachute' technique they like to use as a jotting when working out their doubles. Or they may even show you their (totally unrelated!) double double hand clapping game!

Our term so far.....

We're just over a week into the new term, and Class 9 are already impressing us with their enthusiasm for learning. They loved working as a team to make their own 'human' Roman Numerals in the playground. Can you guess this one?

Our brave School Council nominees have been making posters and presenting their speeches to the class. We wish them the best of luck in the School Council elections tomorrow.

The author Tracy Alexander visited Year 4 this morning, and we used some exciting props to build a story around two different characters we invented.

Some of us bought a book, which was personally signed by Tracy Alexander.

To top it all, we've been so impressive that we've already earnt all these Pom Poms for our Class Pom Pom Pot (try saying that quickly!). When it is full, Class 9 may choose a treat as a reward for all their efforts. Keep up the great work, everyone!

Welcome to Class 9

A very warm welcome to the Class 9 Blog! Mrs Beer and Mrs Sormani look forward to regularly posting updates on this blog as the year progresses. We use it to celebrate work done in class, as well as to inform children and parents of forthcoming events.

We do hope you will be able to attend our 'Welcome to Year 4' briefing in the school hall at 3.40pm on Thursday 11th September. This will be an opportunity to find out more about Year 4 and all the exciting events we have planned for your children.

Another thank you - this time from Mrs Beer

We've had a wonderful year with Class 9. Mrs Adams and I have been sorry to say goodbye to them today, although we know they will make fabulous Year 5's in September.

Thankyou so much for all your thoughtful gifts and lovely cards, from both parents and children. A big thankyou also to the team of parents who so kindly presented me with gift vouchers and some beautiful flowers after school. I will make sure I show the children what I have treated myself to in September! All your kind words, generosity and support have been most appreciated by myself and Mrs Adams and we wish you all a restful Summer break.

Books back please!

Please could we ask for any school reading books to be returned as soon as possible so that our shelves are replenished ready for next year. If you find any school books at home which you have forgotten to return in previous years, please don't be embarrassed! We will gladly welcome them back and relocate them to the appropriate year group.

Thankyou.

A glorious lunch!

It has been a very special lunchtime for myself and Mrs Adams. We were so proud of how Class 9 tried almost everything presented to them at Ashyana restaurant.

Their manners were impeccable and they polished off their plates with such enthusiasm. They had the chance to sample papadoms and all the chutneys, Chicken Korma, Chicken Tikka Masala, Sag Aloo, Vegetable curry, Tarka dhal, boiled rice and Naan bread.

And of course, a fresh hot towel and a chocolate to finish off the meal!

Full, but happy!

Huge thanks to Ashyana for hosting us. The children are bringing home a menu from the restaurant to show you what they have eaten today!

The Pom Pom pot and end of term arrangements

Congratulations to Class 9, who have once more managed to fill up the Pom Pom Pot just in time for the end of term!
The children have voted on their choice of treats and it still seems that watching a film in class is the most popular choice!

On Thursday 17th July (this Thursday), please could children bring in any U rated films they would like the class to vote on. They can also bring in nightwear and a pillow, blanket and cuddly toy should they wish to get comfy. Each child can bring in a small tub or plate of their own food to nibble on during the afternoon. Mrs Beer will also be preparing freshly popped popcorn for the class to enjoy.

On Monday morning (21st July), as part of the Pom Pom pot reward, a small team of pupils have also organised a short games session for the rest of the class. We are really looking forward to seeing what ideas they come up with! We will also be sending books home on this day, so please ensure that your child has a strong plastic bag in school to hold them all.

On the last day of term, Tuesday 22nd July, children may bring in games of their choice to play (we can accept no responsibility for these, so please choose sensibly!). We will also have a class talent show for pupils who would like to take part.

Mrs Adams and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the support you have given the children this year, be it with reading, times tables, spellings or the many other initiatives we have organised. It has been so appreciated. Your enthusiasm obviously rubs off on the children, and Class 9 have fully embraced every opportunity to learn and enjoy all that Year 4 has offered to them. We will miss this amazing class!

Have a wonderful summer break.

Indian restaurant trip tomorrow

Just a reminder that children do not need to bring a packed lunch or pay for a school dinner tomorrow, as we are off to the Indian Restaurant for lunch.

Thankyou.

Y6 dress rehearsal

We were lucky enough to watch the amazing 'We will rock you' dress rehearsal this morning. Year 6 were truly magnificent and we are all in awe of them!

As your child may have mentioned, we have been writing our own plays in Class 9, and they should have brought home a script to practise last week. Due to the Year 6 dress rehearsal taking longer than anticipated, we will now be doing our own dress rehearsals tomorrow morning before break. In the afternoon, we will perform them one more time, to decide the lucky 2 groups who will perform again to the rest of Year 4.

Lights, camera, ACTION!

This week, Class 9 have been writing their own play scripts in groups. We have named our production companies, written scripts and even designed tickets, programs and posters.

Each child is bringing home a copy of the play script they have written in their groups tonight. We would love the children to practise their lines at home, although there is no pressure to learn them off by heart (unless your child is keen to!). We will have a chance to rehearse our plays in class next Monday 14th July, so if your child wants to bring in any props or changes of clothes, please have them in school on this day. On Tuesday 15th July, Mrs Beer will watch each play for a final time (as well as judging the tickets, programs and posters) and will then choose two groups to perform in front of the other Year 4 classes on Wednesday 16th July.

This project is creating such enthusiasm! Thankyou for all your efforts so far, Class 9.

Water Resistance Investigations

In Science today we did some investigations to test water resistance. We made different shapes from plasticine and timed how long they took to reach the bottom of a cylinder filled with water.

Our investigations involved lots of water, so luckily we managed to work outside.

We also tried out different boat shapes and tested how many marbles they could hold before they sank. The record was over 15!
